There is a vast number of different types of wood available for making wooden signs. If you want your sign to last a long time, a hard wood is recommended. The common types of wood used for sign making are pine, mahogany, cedar, and redwood. It is a good idea to hand rub your finished sign with an exterior oil based finish, since this will both highlight and preserve the natural properties of the wood.
If you intend to expose your sign to the elements (i.e. rain, wind, and direct sunlight) then further steps must be taken to give it extra durability.
